Providing cleaning technology for over 40 years!

Numatic International

Numatic is a well-known manufacturer of cleaning equipment and machinery, offering a variety of products including commercial, industrial, and domestic vacuum cleaners, wet vacs, and health and safety vacuum cleaners, such as M-Class and H-Class models. They also provide scrubber dryers, floor scrubbing and polishing machines, as well as janitorial equipment. This company truly represents a success story from the UK. Numatic was established in 1969 in Crewkerne, a quaint town in Somerset, southwest England. It was here that the company created its first commercial vacuum cleaner designed specifically for cleaning coal, oil, and gas-fired boilers. Initially, Numatic started with just six employees working in a small factory no larger than a garage, with the most advanced equipment being a simple drill.

The early vacuum cleaner designs were crafted from a mix of oil drums and readily accessible everyday items, such as suitcase handles, furniture casters, and domestic washing-up bowls. These components were assembled in a manner that ensured a straightforward and dependable workhorse suitable for commercial and industrial applications. Truly, a story of very humble beginnings!

By 1971, the demand had outgrown the small Crewkerne facility, prompting our move to a watermill in nearby Yeovil. It was here that Numatic gained valuable experience with wet pick-up machines. Despite the factory regularly flooding between 5 and 10 cm when the river was high, production continued uninterrupted. This location saw the creation of the first serious commercial vacuum cleaner, the NV-2, shortly followed by the original and very successful NV-250. Both models were constructed from all-steel, and many are still in operation today—over 40 years later. Numatic take pride in their ability to provide replacement parts for every Numatic vacuum cleaner ever made, dating back to our very first model. Available right here at MK Floortec.

By 1973, Numatic began making strides in the professional cleaning industry, launching their first floor cleaning machine—one of which is proudly displayed here at MK Floortec! They also introduced wet and dry vacuums, utilising components sourced from established suppliers.

However, by 1974, Numatic had outgrown the mill and relocated to its first substantial factory in Beaminster, Dorset, where it gradually expanded over the following two decades.

Beaminster was destined to be the birthplace of the 'Henry' Hoover vacuum cleaner, the product that has made Numatic renowned globally, with sales rising steadily each year since its launch in 1981.

Until 1990, Numatic primarily assembled products using metal and plastic components sourced from subcontractors. They then advanced by establishing their own tube manipulation facility, enabling them to create enhanced and more durable commercial products. During this period, Numatic recognised the necessity for increased production capacity and enhanced manufacturing expertise to remain competitive in global markets. Consequently, the Chard location, which is now home to Numatic, was acquired in 1990. The site has been continuously expanding, with a new 20,000 square foot facility currently under construction.

The cornerstone of Numatic’s success lies in the strong connections forged with customers and suppliers around the globe, with MK Floortec being one it’s very early partners. Many of these relationships have endured throughout the company’s history, with some even spanning into second and third generations.
